What happens in our brains when we feel a strong connection with someone? Many people with mental health issues struggle with social interactions and find it difficult to connect with others, which can worsen their mental health problems. Using psychedelics as a tool to alter social functioning, the current study seeks to understand the neurological basis of pro-social feelings and behaviors, potentially helping scientists develop strategies to improve social skills, enhance social interactions, and promote healthy relationships.
Natasha Mason PhD, is an assistant prof at Maastricht University, Dept of Psychopharmacology, with a background in (neuro)psychology and pharmacy. Utilizing multimodal study designs, her current research assesses drug-induced neuroadaptations and their influence on affect, behavior, and cognition. Within this focus, she has a strong interest in the underlying mechanisms of psychedelic drug action, and particularly those which may hold therapeutic value for disorders like anxiety and depression.
